Constructing the boxes
Here is the fun part and where imagination comes into play. The first thing you have to decide is what kind of sound do you want? I like loud, clear, and tight bass. I'm not in to the stuff you can hear from 12 miles away although you might with this system. I chose the JL Audio 10w6v2 subs.
I knew I wanted to put them into the rear side compartments so I could salvage all the rear cargo space that I can possibly have. I built the lower portion of the first box and measured it and it was 7.5 liters of air space. This is a far cry from the 17.7 liters that is needed for the 10w6v2 subs so I was a little panicky at first but still knew I had to build up so I took my chances.
Here is where the imagination comes in. I chose to do this organic design because it would maximize the air space. You also have to keep in mind the dimensions so it will be able to slip in or out after it is finished. I am extremely please with the result.
When building the mdf rings I chose to use a recessed design so the sub looks like it is sunk in. By using this design, you WILL NOT be able to use your top latches, at least with these subs and my design. You could build the box across the entire back and it will be fine. During this time of the construction I put everything down for the night and thought about this. I decided that I did indeed want to have the recessed look and that trumped the top latches. I will have enough room to put the top in the back with a storage back without it sitting on the system and will purchase a bag to protect it and fabricate some type of holding system, or not.
Also, be careful of your material choice if you are making a shaped box. I used a lycra/spandex mix because of its stretchability. This stuff sucks. It doesn't soak the resin up very well. For the passenger side compartment I will use a polyester fleece. I am having to do a lot of extra work on the driver's side because of it as you can see the wrinkles, etc.
Like I said, I am happy with the end result and came out being .08 cubic feet over the recommended amount. I measured my box with water to be exact but you can pretty much do the same with packing peanuts. I plan on painting the boxes and amp racks to match the car.
